Under Pope Gregory XVI in 1839, the archdiocesan history began with the prefecture apostolic of Texas, thus making Galveston the “Mother Church of Texas” The prefecture was elevated to a vicariate apostolic on July 10, 1841. On May 4, 1847, the vicariate became the Diocese of Galveston in the Province of New Orleans and Saint Mary Cathedral Basilica was designated the cathedral.

In 1839, Saint Vincent (destoyed by fire) was the first church established in Houston Texas. The second was to established 30 yeras later in 1869, The Church of The Annunciation. It was the work of the Very Rev. Joseph Querat, a canon of the Cathedral in Lyons, France and a missionary to Texas from 1852-1878.
