Altar Society
We care for the Altar of Our Lord in preparation for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
Through our service, we deepen our devotion to Christ in the Blessed Sacrament while ensuring that our church remains a place of beauty and reverence.
What do we do?
Decorate for liturgical celebrations and special occasions
Care for altar linens and vestments (washing, ironing, mending as needed)
Tend to plants and flowers inside the church
Change candles, tidy pews, and help maintain the sanctuary and sacristy
Assist the Pastor in spiritual and material undertakings for the parish
When & Where We Serve
Liturgical Seasons – changing altar linens at Advent, Christmastide, Lent, Eastertide, and Pentecost
Christmas & Easter – decorating the church, changing linens, arranging flowers (all hands on deck!)
Weekly Flowers – removing old arrangements and preparing fresh ones every Friday
Feast Days & Solemnities – Holy Thursday, St. Joseph’s Feast Day, and other celebrations as directed by the Pastor
Some members help weekly, others only at Christmas and Easter—it all helps!
Why This Matters
Linen altar cloths symbolize reverence for the Eucharist and recall the shroud of Christ. Their use dates back to the earliest centuries of the Church.
The USCCB reminds us: “Whatever is set aside for use in the liturgy takes on a certain sacred character… The cloths used at the altar should be treated with the care and respect due to those things used in the preparation and celebration of the sacred mysteries.
“God dwells in our midst, in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.” – St. Maximilian Kolbe
“It would be easier for the world to survive without the sun than to do without Holy Mass.” – St. Pio of Pietrelcina
