Confirmation Preparation Information

  • What does it mean to be “ready” for Confirmation?

There is no rush to get started if your teen or family isn’t ready this year. Some indicators of readiness is if your teen:

    • Completed one year, minimum of religious education

    • Was BAPTIZED in the Roman Catholic Church, and you can produce the baptismal certificate at time of registration (along with your teen’s birth certificate)

    • Desires the Sacrament of Confirmation.

    • Attends Mass on every Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation

    • Goes to sacramental Confession at least once a year

  • As a parent, your role in your child’s formation is essential to their journey toward holiness. The Church asks that you show a firm commitment to living and practicing the Catholic faith.

There are no conveyor belts to Heaven or the sacraments. This year is not the right year for your family if you cannot answer “YES!” to the following questions:

    • Do you attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation?
Jesus commands us to keep the Lord’s Day holy. Skipping Mass without a serious reason is a mortal sin. If Mass attendance is not already a habit, now is a great time to return to this sacred rhythm.

    • Do you go to Confession regularly?
At the bare minimum, the Church asks every Catholic to go to Confession at least once a year. But ideally, we go monthly. Frequent Confession brings healing and strength.

    • Do you receive Holy Communion at least once a year (during Easter season)?
If you're in a state of grace, receiving the Eucharist more often is encouraged—it is our spiritual food!

    • Do you continue to learn and grow in the faith?
You’ve been confirmed—but the journey doesn’t end there. Do you seek to deepen your understanding of what the Church teaches and why?

    • Do you live the Church’s vision of marriage and family life?
Are you married in the Catholic Church (if applicable)? Are you raising your children in the faith? Parenting supports the same kind of commitment.

    • Do you support the Church?
Through your time, talent, and treasure—do you serve your parish and support the mission of the wider Church, including our Holy Father?

    • Do you practice penance?
Do you follow the Church’s calls to fast and abstain from meat on the appointed days?

    • Do you share the Faith?
Parents are missionary disciples. Are you willing to live and speak about your faith in ways that help others come to know Jesus?

What Happens If We’re Not There Yet?

Don’t be discouraged. If you find yourself saying “not yet” to some of the above, it doesn’t mean you’re rejected—it means the Church is inviting you to grow.

The Eucharist is too sacred to treat casually, and your “yes” as a parent matters more than just today—it lasts for a lifetime.

We’d love to walk with you and support your journey back into full practice of the faith. That’s what the Church is here for.

    • Is no less than 15 years old at the beginning of the Confirmation preparation year

    • Is baptized and able to renew baptismal promises unless a grave reason suggests otherwise

    • Exhibits an active faith life and knowledge of the Church

    • Participates in the sacramental life of the Church, especially Eucharistic Liturgies and the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation

    • Is committed to active involvement in parish Confirmation catechesis

    • Will respond to the call of serving in the apostolate of the Church

    • Has completed one year, minimum, systematic catechesis and is committed to continuing education in the Catholic religion during the sacrament preparation year.

    • Is committed to learning and growing in the Catholic faith following Confirmation and throughout his/her lifetime

    • Has received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist and leads a life of faith consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church. [Has received the healing and graces available through the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.]

    • Is committed to living the Precepts of the Catholic Church (below). We understand that Confirmation candidates are dependent upon their parents at this time. However, this will not always be the case. Therefore, candidates should carefully review and commit to life-long obedience of these precepts.

    • Is willing to participate, as a family, in an initial interview with Confirmation Catechists.

High School Confirmation Enrollment Steps

1

Register your teen for Religious Education and Confirmation

Just like our children go to school every year, our children should attend Religious Education each year to encourage and reinforce the formation they are already receiving at home.

At least one year is required to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

  • Confirmation sponsors have an important role in the lives of those receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Below are some helpful guidelines to remember as you choose your sponsor.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A CONFIRMATION SPONSOR?
The sponsor prays for their candidate, answers questions, and serves as a role model in the faith. Choose someone who lives his or her Catholic life well: daily prayer, weekly Mass, knowledgeable about the faith. Obviously, the sponsor doesn’t have to be perfect, but he or she must be striving to live our Catholic faith every day. Although it is not absolutely necessary, it is most helpful if the sponsor is local so that he or she can frequently meet up with you.

DO SPONSORS HAVE TO BE CATHOLIC?
Yes, sponsors must be fully initiated (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) Catholics who attend Mass regularly and are able to receive the Eucharist. An unbaptized or non-Christian person is not eligible to be a sponsor for Confirmation.

DO SPONSORS HAVE TO BE MARRIED IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH?
Yes, if married, a sponsor’s marriage must be recognized by the Catholic Church. If married civilly or in another Christian tradition, he or she is not eligible to serve as a sponsor until the marriage is recognized in the Catholic Church.

HOW MANY SPONSORS CAN I HAVE?
Per canon law, you may only have one official confirmation sponsor who will commit to helping you on your faith journey for life.
